NORTHERN IRELAND STUDENTS ENTER ALL IRELAND DESIGN AWARDS

May 2008: Northern Ireland students are in the running to win an all Ireland accolade for their designs in wood at the third Annual Wood Marketing Federation Awards which take place in June.

The awards, which are sponsored by Wood NI (the professional timber suppliers for Northern Ireland), give students from all over Ireland the chance to showcase their woodwork skills. The purpose of the award is to increase students’ knowledge of wood and it’s specification; to promote the use of wood as a design and building material and to promote innovative wood products.

Students of engineering, architecture and design have been invited to enter the competition. All the entrants are third level students who use wood as the main element of their final year project.

Southern Regional College Student, Stephen Ryan, helped to launch the event. Stephen, who won the best design in wood award in 2007, was delighted to help launch the awards and feels that it is a great opportunity for local wood design students.

“I am extremely happy to be launching the third annual WMF Awards and feel very proud that there are a number of entrants from Northern Ireland. There is a wealth of very talented craftsmen and women in the province and this competition offers them the chance to receive national recognition for their skills”

The University of Ulster, Queens University and The Southern Regional College have all entered students into the competition which has two phases. Initially each local college will host an individual final, the winners of which will then compete in the three categories at the all Ireland final.

All projects will be judged taking into account different factors such as innovation, presentation, commerciality, use of wood and sustainability.

There is a national prize of €4,000 in each of the three categories, €2,000 of which will go to the student and €2,000 will go to the college. In addition there is a €200 prize for each local winner in each category.

The local finals will be taking place at the end of May 2008 with the national winners being announced on June 13th.
